What is a Liposome?
The name liposome is derived from two Greek words: 'Lipos' meaning fat and 'Soma' meaning body. It is defined as an artificial microscopic vesicle consisting of an aqueous core enclosed in one or more phospholipid layers. In other words a liposome is a tiny 'micro' sized bubble or sphere (vesicle) made from a phospholipid (in our case, phosphatidylcholine). This is the same material of which our cell membranes consist. These bubbles can be filled with substances such as Vitamin C, Glutathione or even drugs. Liposomes have the ability to carry either water or fat-soluble payloads, which makes them an ideal delivery system.
Why Liposomal Technology?
The liposomal delivery system has many advantages over regular oral ingestion.
1. BIOAVAILABILITY:
When a regular capsule or pill is ingested it must first pass from the mouth through the digestive system to finally be absorbed in the small intestine. During this process, digestives enzymes in the mouth and stomach, digestive acids, bile salts and various gut flora degrade the nutrients before they are finally metabolised by the liver and made available to the body. This entire process slows and reduces the nutrients' bioavailability.
Phospholipids are impervious to the various digestive juices. This makes liposomes the perfect delivery system for acid and enzyme-reactive substances. Once the liposome has reached the small intestine it is absorbed by the enterocytes of the villi. Inside the enterocytes, the liposomes are incorporated into chylomicrons. Together, they travel through the lymph system, bypassing the liver (portal circulation) into the subclavian vein.
2. INTRACELLULAR DELIVERY:
Another major advantage of the liposomal delivery system is the way it delivers the nutrients on an intra-cellular level. A liposome can do this in a number of ways.
- Endocytosis - Endocytosis is a process in which the liposome gains entry into a cell without actually passing through the cell membrane. The cell engulfs the liposome forming a membrane-bounded vesicle called an endosome.
- Adsorption - The liposome wall adheres to that of the cell and releases its payload into the cell.
- Fusion - The melding of the liposome membrane with the membrane of the cell, carrying the contents of the liposome into the cell.
- Lipid Exchange - The contents of the liposome and cell exchange their lipid contents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long will LipoLife products after opening?
A: Our stability testing has shown the product will have full efficacy for at least twelve months if stored correctly.
Q: Will mixing my LipoLife product with water or juice destroy the liposomes?
A: No. However once mixed it should be consumed promptly to avoid oxidation. It should not be mixed in a hot drink as this will destroy the liposomes.
Q: I am allergic to soy. I see LipoLife products contain lecithin derived from soy. Does that mean I can't take LipoLife products?
A: The phosphatidylcholine in the product is derived from non-GMO soy lecithin, but laboratory testing confirms that at the point of manufacture there are no soy proteins left in the product.
Q: Are LipoLife products hexane-free?
A: Yes, absolutely. We do not use any hexane or solvents in the manufacturing process.
Q: What are the size of the liposomes in LipoLife products?
A: Liposome size distribution in the Lipolife® products are 100-500nm.
Q: What is the source of Vitamin C in LipoLIfe Gold?
A: The Vitamin C in Lipolife® products is Potassium and Sodium Ascorbate.
Q: Does LipoLife CoQ10 use Ubiquinol or Ubiquinone?
A: We use ubiquinone in our liposomal CoQ10 product, ubiquinone is very stable and absorption is ensured thanks to the unique delivery system. CoQ10 shifts back and forth between its ubiquinone (oxidised) and its ubiquinol (reduced) form in a continuous cycle inside the body. Ubiquinone is essential for its role in cellular energy metabolism (ATP synthesis) while Ubiquinol is essential as an antioxidant in the blood.
Q: What Vitamin E is used and where does it come from?
A: A mixture of alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocopherols are put in the phosphatidyl choline as an anti-oxidant in the concentration of 0.01%. The Vitamin E is naturally derived from sunflower plant oils.
Q: With regard to the Aloe Vera in the LipoLife Gold product, what part of the plant is used and why?
A: Around 0.1 ml Aloe Vera gel concentrate (1:10) per serving is present. The purpose is to increase the absorption of Vitamin C.
Q: Why do you use Potassium sorbate in your product and how much is in your products?
A: Potassium Sorbate is a salt of sorbic acid which is found naturally in some fruits and berries; it is commonly used as a food preservative to inhibit the growth of mould and yeast. Lipolife® products use minimal amounts of Potassium Sorbate, (0.2%).
