Dr Clark Heavy Metals Program
According to recent research, modern urban man may experience exposures to heavy metals that are 500 to 1000 times higher than pre-industrialised man. The increased extraction of toxic metal elements from beneath the Earth’s surface for industrial processes has resulted in the pollution of our air, drinking water and food supplies, leading to a slow, chronic accumulation of heavy metals within our bodies.
The group of elements commonly referred to as “heavy metals” includes mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel, titanium and aluminium, though technically the latter two are actually quite light metals. Most heavy metals are toxic to the body, though some such as iron, germanium and copper are vital for health in their organic form, but toxic in their inorganic (industrial) form.
Research suggests that these industrial metals may exert toxic effects on the body through a number of processes, including:
- Heavy metals may catalyse oxidative reactions, encouraging the production of free radicals within the body.
- Heavy metals may block other minerals (e.g. zinc, magnesium and trace elements) from occupying enzymatic binding sites. This would in turn reduce the function of these enzymes, ultimately disrupting the bodies normal metabolic processes.
- Chronic heavy metal exposure can change the structure of some proteins, which may for example affect certain aspects of the nervous and immune systems.
- Lipid structures that are present in every cell may be altered, in turn disturbing the normal exchange of nutrients at the cell membrane.
